At 13, Indonesian jazz piano prodigy Joey Alexander has already played at prestigious festivals, clubs and venues all over the world, including last year’s TED Conference. His first album (released when he was 11!) scored Grammy nominations in 2015 for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Improvised Jazz Solo.

Following a profile of Joey by 60 Minutes early this year, his debut album (which features two Vail Jazz Workshop alumni) jumped to #1 on the Amazon Best Sellers chart and #4 on the iTunes Top Albums chart, receiving glowing accolades from The New York Times, CNN, Keyboard Magazine, Billboard Magazine, and many others. Exposed at an early age to jazz classics through his father’s record collection, his early influences include Ellington, Monk, Evans and Coltrane, although he admits to a special affinity for trumpet players too. His deft touch, adventurous and sometimes impressionistic musical spirit and improvisatory verve are nothing less than stunning.

Joey Alexander plays Jazz @ Vail Square on Thursday, Aug. 4, as part of the weekly Jazz @ Vail Square series at The Arrabelle at Vail Square in Lionshead from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $40 fr premium. Prices increase by $5 at the door.

The remainder of the summer jazz season includes weekly concerts for the Vail Jazz @ Vail Square, the Thursday night series, and the Vail Jazz Party on Labor Day Weekend.
