5 fun things happening in and around Vail on opening weekend

November 15, 2015
Listen Now!
Vail Mountain opens for the 2015-16 season on Nov. 20, which provides quite a draw to the area. But what else is there to do? Here's five fun things to do that don't involve a chairlift ride.
U.S. Ski Team naming and autograph signing
The U.S. Alpine Ski Team will be announced this year on Nov. 21 at
Copper Mountain, 18 miles east of Vail. Ted Ligety, Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin and more will be at the event. The announcement is scheduled for 2 p.m., with an athlete autograph signing to follow from 3 to 5 p.m. This is a great opportunity for the kids to get posters signed by and pictures taken with three Olympic gold medalists in one location at one time.

Aqueous concert
Tearing out of Buffalo NY, rock/groove powerhouse Aqueous takes the stage on Nov. 18 at Agave in Avon, 10 miles west of Vail. Aqueous has built a name for themselves nationally, following years of touring and high profile sets at festivals like Summer Camp, Peach Festival, Moe.Down, Catskill Chill, The Frendly Gathering, and countless others. Aqueous has built a reputation for bringing high energy and tireless effort to their craft, and fans rave about the uniqueness and power behind every performance. Featured as one of Relix Magazine's "On The Verge" artists, there seems no limit to the quartet's journey to the top. With three studio albums under their belts, and their critically acclaimed live collection "Live Nugs," Aqueous is as strong in composing as they are at communicating and improvising during their shows. Their onstage persona is infectious and undeniable; their lifelong friendship stands as a testament to the tightness of the music.

Slalom races
Vail's Golden Peak race training center is hands down the best November ski racing training for slalom and giant slalom skiers in the entire world. National teams from all over the globe have been known to frequent the area ever since a state of the art snowmaking system was installed there at the end of the last decade. But there was always only training, there has never been any spectator friendly ski race action to be had. Until now. On Nov. 20-21, the United States Ski and Snowboard Association and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail will host National Performance Series slalom races, and families will be able to see the racers bashing the gates to the finish line from the spectator friendly viewing area at the base of Golden Peak.

The Nordic center is also open, big sale underway
Skiing in Vail isn't just limited to alpine, the cross country skiing at the Vail Golf Course is absolutely beautiful and is already underway as early season snow conditions have been good. If you're new to the craft and need gear, of if you know the craft but need new gear, Saturday, Nov. 21 is the day to stop by as the Nordic Center's annual sale gets underway at 10 a.m. The Nordic Center is located at the Vail Golf Course clubhouse on Vail Valley Drive, one mile east of Vail Village.
